The Challenge
When Adam Gandy, founder of Smart Build & Design Ltd was given the task to convert a delightful barn and garage into a desirable Air BnB home-from-home for their clients to let out in Cheshire, his 1st thought was how to maximise the space.

“At Smart Build, we pride ourselves on thinking outside of the box and this barn conversion certainly had its challenges, despite being one of our smaller projects. The client wanted to create a self-contained annex to their home with all the services, and yet retain part of the ground floor for a garage. This gave us some challenges in making best use of the footprint.”

In doing so, the remaining wall space became a premium and so the original specification called for underfloor heating.

“The clients were unsure of how successful the Airbnb would be so they were looking for a cost effective heating solution that would get them started and could later be adapted to work with a heat pump as part of their long term strategy to move off fossil fuels. We originally though that only UFH could give us that option to move over to a heat pump without having to install big ugly radiators in the meantime.

However, we soon realised that cutting away the joists was risky and raising the floor height via an ‘overlaid’ system would negatively impact on head height.” 

The Solution

Adam then recalled seeing a skirting board heating solution on BBC’s Dragons Den some years ago and out of curiosity googled ‘skirting heating’.

Immediately he discovered that skirting heating was really a ‘thing’ and was manufactured locally to him in Manchester by Discrete Heat.

ThermaSkirt is a radiant heating system that is designed to replicate a skirting board profile. Made from aluminum, the warm water from the primary heat source passes through integral tubes on the back of the profile. The front face then heats up and radiates warmth – from a low level all around the room just like UFH. More than 45,000 systems have been successfully installed all over the world.

The Result

Adam explains further;

“The Barn provides a kitchen on the ground floor with a living/bedroom and bathroom above. There clearly wasn’t room for a radiator in the kitchen and we didn’t want to dig the floor out so we were pleased to see that ThermaSkirt can also be provided in a kitchen plinth version. We opted for a Torus profile in the main bedroom and a grey plinth to compliment the units in the kitchen”
